Vettel seals historic world title defence

Germany's Sebastian Vettel became Formula One's youngest back-to-back world champion on Sunday when he finished third in the Japanese Grand Prix behind Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso.

The Red Bull driver, 24, who needed just one point to clinch the title, joins Juan Manuel Fangio, Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher as one of only nine drivers to successfully defend the world title.

He ran down the pit lane to celebrate with his mechanics after the race, which sealed the championship with four grands prix remaining following a dominant season with nine wins in 15 outings.

"There are so many things you want to say, but it's hard to remember all of them," Vettel said.

"I'm so thankful to everyone in the team, pushing hard to build those two cars. It's great to achieve the goal we set ourselves this year already.

"Today's race we weren't as quick on the soft tyres and we lost two positions, and it was difficult to get past Fernando."

At just 24 years and 98 days, Vettel outstrips fellow consecutive winners Alberto Ascari, Fangio, Jack Brabham, Alain Prost, Senna, Schumacher, Mika Hakkinen and Fernando Alonso as the youngest driver to achieve the feat.

Button's victory, which came after he passed Vettel in the second round of pit stops on lap 21, was his third of the season and the 12th of his career.

The McLaren driver finished 1.1 seconds ahead of Spain's Alonso of Ferrari, with Vettel's third place easily enough to secure the world title.

Australian Mark Webber was fourth for Red Bull, eight seconds adrift of Button, while Briton Lewis Hamilton of McLaren had another controversial race, clashing again with Felipe Massa of Ferrari en route to finishing fifth.

Schumacher was sixth for Mercedes, briefly leading the race after the final round of pit stops, while Massa was seventh.

Mexican Sergio Perez came through from 17th on the grid to take eighth for Sauber with a two-stop strategy, while German Nico Rosberg drove his Mercedes from second-last on the grid to finish 10th.

Vettel didn't lead last year's world championship until after the final race in Abu Dhabi, but this season he has never been headed in the standings.

Demi Moore has consulted a divorce lawyer after the failure of a last-ditch bid to save her marriage to Ashton Kutcher.

The 48-year-old actress’s marriage hit the rocks after allegations that Kutcher cheated on her.

Kutcher, 33, is alleged to have had sex with 23-year-old Texan Sara Leal in a hotel at the end of September – at a time when the actor should have been preparing to celebrate his sixth wedding anniversary with Miss Moore.

Last night an entertainment industry insider said: ‘Miss Moore has been totally humiliated. On Friday, therefore, she consulted a lawyer about getting a divorce.

'The discussion included her living arrangements and how a divorce would impact her assets. She is worth about £97 million and Kutcher is also worth close to that.

‘This is a huge and very tough decision for Miss Moore to take. But her trust has been shattered.’

Miss Moore already had two broken marriages behind her – to songwriter Freddy Moore and actor Bruce Willis – when she wed Kutcher in 2005.

Pakistan players' participation in IPL to be discussed - Shukla

The participation of Pakistan players in next year's IPL will come up for discussion during the next IPL governing council meeting on October 14, Rajiv Shukla, the league's chairman, has said. Pakistan players have not taken part in the IPL following the terrorist attacks in Mumbai in November 2008, and even though 11 of them featured in the auction list for the third edition of the tournament in 2010, none were picked up by the franchises. Some of the franchises put it down to the uncertainty over their availability following a breakdown in diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan.

"This decision has to be taken by the Governing Council. It is not that Pakistan as a country has been banned in IPL," Shukla told PTI. "Their (Pakistani) referees' services have been utilised. Some franchises have taken Pakistani former players as coaches also and supporting staff as well. So it is not that Pakistan as a whole has been banned or something. There is no question of banning anyone."

The final call, however, rested with the franchises, Shukla said. "About Pakistani players, it is purely up to the franchises to decide whether they want to take Pakistani players or not. And we have to keep certain considerations in mind before deciding about it."

With regards to the resumption of cricketing ties with Pakistan, Shukla said matters of security and scheduling needed to be resolved before going ahead. He was also not too keen on the idea of playing at a neutral venue. "We have worked together. The question is about the circumstances and certain issues ... in terms of security. Those issues are to be sorted out. Then only, we can think of it.

"At the same time, there is no slot available. If there is slot available, then all these things can be discussed. Everybody wants cricket ties to be revived, to be resumed but slot has to be there to resume the ties.

"Secondly the atmosphere should be congenial because I am of the view that we should play on each others' soil instead of playing at a third venue. There is no point on playing at a third venue."

The termination of the Kochi franchise and the number of teams for the next IPL will also be discussed at the meeting.

Protests against corporate greed and economic inequality spread across America on Thursday and found unlikely sympathy from a top official of one of main targets of scorn -- the Federal Reserve.

The Occupy Wall Street movement that began in New York last month with a few people has expanded to protests in more than a dozen cities.

They included Tampa, Florida; Trenton and Jersey City, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Norfolk, Virginia in the East; to Chicago and St. Louis in the Midwest; Houston, San Antonio and Austin in Texas; Nashville, Tennessee; and Portland, Oregon, Seattle and Los Angeles in the West.

Dallas Federal Reserve President Richard Fisher surprised a business group in Fort Worth, Texas on Thursday when he said: "I am somewhat sympathetic -- that will shock you.

The Fed played a key role in one of the protest targets, the 2008 Wall Street bailout that critics say let banks enjoy huge profits while average Americans suffered high unemployment and job insecurity.

"We have too many people out of work," Fisher said. "We have a very uneven distribution of income. ... We have a very frustrated people, and I can understand their frustration."

In addition to the bailout, protesters have raged against corporate greed and influence over American life, the gap between rich and poor, and hapless, corrupt politicians.

"I'm fed up with the government, I'm fed up with the bailouts. If I fail at my job, I don't get a bonus -- I get fired," said Tim Lucas, 49, vice president of a software company, who was protesting in Austin.

Hundreds of people have been arrested in New York since the protests began last month. On Wednesday, the biggest crowd so far of about 5,000 people marched on New York's financial district, and police used pepper spray on some protesters. But protests for the most part have been nonviolent.

President Barack Obama's warning to Islamabad over suspected ties to militants will only fuel anti-Americanism and make it harder for Pakistan to support U.S. efforts to stabilise Afghanistan, a senior senator said on Friday.

Pakistan is seen as critical to bringing peace to neighbouring Afghanistan, but the United States has failed to persuade it to go after militant groups it says cross the border to attack Western forces in Afghanistan.

"This is not helping either the United States, Afghanistan or Pakistan," Salim Saifullah, chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, told Reuters.

"There will be pressure on the (Pakistan) government to get out of this war," he said, referring to the U.S. war on militancy.

Obama warned Pakistan on Thursday that its ties with "unsavory characters" had put relations with the United States at risk, as he ratcheted up pressure on Islamabad to cut links with militants mounting attacks in Afghanistan.

His comments are likely to deepen a crisis in the strategic alliance between the United States and Pakistan.

Obama accused Pakistan's leaders of "hedging their bets" on Afghanistan's future, but stopped short of threatening to cut off U.S. aid, despite calls from lawmakers for a tougher line over accusations that Pakistani intelligence supported strikes on U.S. targets in Afghanistan.

Pakistan says it has sacrificed more than any other nation that joined America's global "war on terror" after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, losing 10,000 soldiers and security forces, and 30,000 civilians.

Pakistan is often accused of playing a double game, vowing to help the United States fight some militant groups while using others as proxies in Afghanistan.

Ties were heavily damaged after U.S. special forces launched a secret raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan in May, which Islamabad saw as a violation of its sovereignty.

Syrian forces killed at least eight people when they opened fire to disperse protests against President Bashar al-Assad after Friday prayers (October 7) in Damascus and Homs, activists said, as Russia's president urged him to undertake reforms or step down.

The head of the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said three died in the Damascus suburb of Douma, one in Zabadani near the Lebanese border and four in Bab Sbaa, a district in the central city of Homs.

At least 25 people were wounded, he said, in the latest round in almost seven months of demonstrations seeking more political freedoms. Assad has held autocratic power for 11 years and his late father for three decades before that.

Video footage posted online in social media websites showed several people bleeding seriously as they are evacuated away from streets echoing with the sound of gunfire.

Reuters cannot independently verify content uploaded to social media websites.

An activist told Al Jazeera television that protesters had burned the flags of Russia and China for blocking a European-drafted U.N. Security Council resolution urging Syria to end its six-month crackdown on protesters.

In the east of the country, four gunmen shot dead prominent Kurdish opposition figure Mishaal al-Tammo and wounded his son.

It was not clear who was behind the attack. Tammo, a charismatic figure who was released from jail earlier this year, was a critic of Assad who had also angered powerful Kurdish parties because of his criticism of Kurdish rivals.

There were reports that at least another two died at the Tammo's protest in Qamishli.

WikiLeaks claims its website being hacked

LONDON: Hours ahead of an expected leak of millions of classified US documents, WikiLeaks today claimed it was under a cyber attack but said the documents would be made public through several leading newspapers.

In a Twitter message, the whistleblower website said: "We are currently under a mass distributed denial of service attack."

It added that even if its website goes down a number of newspapers will go ahead and publish the documents released to them.

Ahead of the release of the potentially embarrassing documents, which the US fears could harm its relations with several countries, the American administration asked the website to refrain from making the classified documents public.

It has asked it to return the "illegally obtained" papers, insisting that their leak would "endanger the lives of countless individuals."

The Twitter message from the website said El Pais, Le Monde, Speigel, Guardian and New York Times newspapers will publish many US embassy cables tonight, even if WikiLeaks goes down.

The website has already released thousands of documents on the US-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In October WikiLeaks released four lakh secret US files on Iraq war detailing abuse of Iraqi prisoners in US custody, rights violations and civilian deaths.

Earlier in July, the website had published tens of thousands of secret documents on the war in Afghanistan.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange today said the soon-to-be released classified US documents will cover "every major issue" in the world.

Assange put the number of documents to be released at more than a quarter of a million.

Late yesterday Washington rejected talks with WikiLeaks, saying the website was holding the cables in violation of US law.

Assange has however rejected the claim that the release would put to harm many lives

CNN) -- The whistleblower website WikiLeaks is under cyber attack, but even if it goes down, a new cache of leaked U.S. diplomatic cables will still be published Sunday night, it said via Twitter Sunday.The announcements come shortly after the United States warned WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Julian Assange that publishing the papers would be illegal and endanger peoples' lives. The New York Times, The Guardian newspaper in England, and newspapers and magazines in three other European nations are planning to publish new classified material on Sunday, WikiLeaks said on Twitter.

The site is experiencing a distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack, it said. That's an effort to make a website unavailable to users, normally by flooding it with requests for data. The U.S. State Department's legal adviser said Saturday that if any materials in the posting of documents by the site were provided by government officials without proper authorization, "they were provided in violation of U.S. law and without regard for the grave consequences of this action." WikiLeaks indicated last week that it was preparing to release a new batch of previously classified U.S. military documents.

"Next release is 7x the size of the Iraq War Logs," the group stated via Twitter Monday. "Intense pressure over it for months. Keep us strong." State Department Legal Adviser Harold Hongju Koh told Assange he was responding to a letter about the newest leak. Koh wrote that the department had spoken with representatives from The New York Times and The Guardian newspapers, and the German magazine Der Spiegel about 250,000 documents the whistleblower organization provided to them for publication. WikiLeaks said Sunday it had also given documents to El Pais in Spain and Le Monde in France.

Koh described the distribution as the "illegal dissemination of classified documents" and said it would "place at risk the lives of countless individuals" -- criticisms that have been repeated by U.S. officials after past postings on the site. The information blitz from WikiLeaks is expected to offer a glimpse into the worldwide communications of the State Department and its 297 embassies, consulates and missions through what are commonly referred to as "cables." The United States has rejected talks with WikiLeaks over its planned release of confidential US documents, saying the whistle-blower website was holding them in violation of US law. The US State Department late Saturday set out its position in a letter to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and his attorney that was released to the media.

"We will not engage in a negotiation regarding the further release or dissemination of illegally obtained US government classified materials," State Department legal adviser Harold Koh wrote.

"As you know, if any of the materials you intend to publish were provided by any government officials, or any intermediary without proper authorization, they were provided in violation of US law and without regard for the grave consequences of this action," Koh continued.

"As long as WikiLeaks holds such material, the violation of the law is ongoing."

WikiLeaks was reportedly hours away from releasing millions of confidential US diplomatic cables on Sunday as governments braced for the potential fallout. /P>

Top US officials have raced to contain the damage in recent days by warning foreign ministries in more than a dozen countries, including key allies Australia, Britain, Canada, Israel and Turkey.

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has repeatedly urged the United States to attack Iran to destroy its nuclear programme, according to leaked US diplomatic cables that describe how other Arab allies have secretly agitated for military action against Tehran.

The revelations, in secret memos from US embassies across the Middle East, expose behind-the-scenes pressures in the scramble to contain the Islamic Republic, which the US, Arab states and Israel suspect is close to acquiring nuclear weapons. Bombing Iranian nuclear facilities has hitherto been viewed as a desperate last resort that could ignite a far wider war.

The Saudi king was recorded as having "frequently exhorted the US to attack Iran to put an end to its nuclear weapons programme", one cable stated. "He told you [Americans] to cut off the head of the snake," the Saudi ambassador to Washington, Adel al-Jubeir said, according to a report on Abdullah's meeting with the US general David Petraeus in April 2008.

The cables also highlight Israel's anxiety to preserve its regional nuclear monopoly, its readiness to go it alone against Iran – and its unstinting attempts to influence American policy. The defence minister, Ehud Barak, estimated in June 2009 that there was a window of "between six and 18 months from now in which stopping Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons might still be viable". After that, Barak said, "any military solution would result in unacceptable collateral damage."

The leaked US cables also reveal that:

• Officials in Jordan and Bahrain have openly called for Iran's nuclear programme to be stopped by any means, including military.

• Leaders in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt referred to Iran as "evil", an "existential threat" and a power that "is going to take us to war".

• Robert Gates, the US defence secretary, warned in February that if diplomatic efforts failed, "we risk nuclear proliferation in the Middle East, war prompted by an Israeli strike, or both".

• Major General Amos Yadlin, Israeli's military intelligence chief, warned last year: "Israel is not in a position to underestimate Iran and be surprised like the US was on 11 September 2001."

Asked for a response to the statements, state department spokesman PJ Crowley said today it was US policy not to comment on materials, including classified documents, which may have been leaked.

Iran maintains that its atomic programme is designed to supply power stations, not nuclear warheads. After more than a year of deadlock and stalling, a fresh round of talks with the five permanent members of the UN security council plus Germany is due to begin on 5 December.

Terry Jones, the Florida pastor who is planning a Koran-burning rally to protest the 9/11 terrorist attacks, plans to go through with the event despite a warning from the U.S. commander in Afghanistan that the protest could harm American soldiers.

"We have firmly made up our mind, but at the same time, we are definitely praying about it," said Jones, who heads the Dove World Outreach Church in Gainesville, Fla., told CNN

Jones said his group is "weighing the situation."

However, the pastor said his fight against radical Islam won't be stopped.

"Once in awhile, you see that in the Bible, there are instances where enough is enough and you stand up," Jones said.

U.S. officials and Muslims across the world have expressed outrage over the event.

Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, said Monday that burning Korans could put U.S. troops in danger.

"It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan," Petraeus said. "Were the actual burning to take place, the safety of our soldiers and civilians would be put in jeopardy and accomplishment of the mission would be made more difficult," he said.

Muslims in Afghanistan protested outside a mosque in Kabul Monday, chanting "Death to America" a day after thousands of Indonesians demonstrated outside the U.S. embassy in Jakarta.

Jones said his rally is aimed at the "radical" Muslims, not moderate Muslims.

"Our message is a message of warning to the radical element of Islam."

To honor Bob Schimmel’s passing, Howard Stern announced this morning that there will be a special in Bob’s memory tonight, September 7, Howard 101 (at 7 p.m.).

Bob Schimmel was a frequent guest on Howard Stern and a good friend to all on the show, so his death last Friday hit Stern and his fans pretty hard.

Robert Schimmel was involved in a car crash and suffered serious injuries after the car, driven by his 19-year-old daughter, rolled to the side of the freeway when she attempted to avoid another car. He died Friday at age 60.

Howard Stern talked about Schimmel during his radio show this morning and made mention of the Bob Schimmel special on Howard 101 tonight.

Stern noted that Schimmel is a “hard guy to forget.” Based on the outpouring of fan love, I’d say that’s about right.

After Boise State's convincing win over the Virginia Tech Hokies, the voters need to make sure to take notice.

The Broncos of Boise State showed off every facet of their game. They dominated the opening quarter with a suffocating defense, they showed off their special teams prowess, and they put their explosive offense on display in the final two minutes. The team was brilliant at various points throughout the game, and dare I say, BCS worthy.

It's time for the voters to throw out their preseason ballots and pretend they know nothing about college football history. The days of Tim Tebow and Colt McCoy are behind us and it's time for the rankings to reflect that.

The AP Top 25's preseason poll had the top five teams in the country as follows: Alabama, Ohio State, Boise State, Florida, and Texas.

Although they maintained the same top five in their preseason poll, the USA Today Poll's was slightly shuffled. The coaches who voted in this poll moved both Florida and Texas ahead of Boise State, leaving the Broncos to drop down to the No. 5 spot in the rankings.

It's time for one of the two to reconsider and Boise State did their best to make the coaches and not the Associated Press be the ones to do so.

Why bother with the bun? That's the premise of KFC's latest offering -- the Double Down -- a sandwich that replaces the traditional bun with two Original Recipe chicken fillets.

"It's such a meaty chicken sandwich, there's no room for a bun," Rick Maynard, a KFC spokesman told Slashfood.

But the sandwich -- currently being tested in Omaha, Neb., and Providence, R.I. -- has some wondering if the Colonel has gone too far.

Newspapers like the Hartford Courant called the appearance of the Double Down a "complete 180" for the chain, and the Vancouver Sun estimated that the sandwich -- two chicken fillets sandwiching Swiss and pepper jack cheeses, bacon and "the Colonel's sauce" -- weighs in at 1,228 calories.

Maynard told Slashfood that KFC estimates the sandwich's caloric count at "just under 600," though the final nutritional data is not in.

Earlier this year, the chain unveiled a healthier dining option -- Kentucky Grilled Chicken -- under the Unthink ad campaign. But KFC uses the same Unthink logo in a Double Down TV advertisement, where a man exclaims "there should be more chicken in a chicken sandwich!"

The price of the sandwich varies but in Omaha, one foodie found it selling for $4.99, with combos -- including fries and soda pop -- going for $6.99.

It might just be the greatest thing since sliced bread.

KFC is selling a sandwich that uses two fried chicken filets instead of a bun.

Between the finger-lickin' pieces of chicken are two slices of bacon, melted slices of swiss and pepper jack cheese and a dollop of "the Colonel's sauce."

It's been dubbed the "Double Down," and "It's so much 100 percent premium chicken, we didn't have room for a bun," according to a KFC commercial posted on YouTube.

Is your mouth watering? Well, don't run down to your local KFC just yet. The Colonel is test marketing these calorie bombs only in Providence, R.I., and Omaha, Neb.

They're $6.99 (not including airfare) for a value meal including fries and a drink.

The calorie count has yet to be posted on KFC's Web site. But an independent analysis by the Vancouver Sun (yet another example of Canadians looking down on Americans) estimates the Double Down has 1,228 calories.

To put that into perspective, that's almost 300 calories more than a Wendy's Triple with Everything.

Forty years ago on a dark night on a quiet island off Massachusetts, Senator Ted Kennedy drove his car off a bridge after leaving a party with a young woman, killing her and forever marring his legacy.

The tragedy on Chappaquiddick Island, in which 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne was trapped under the car in a tidal pool and died, led to accusations that Kennedy used his name and influence to escape justice. With its whiff of sex, alcohol and privileged self-indulgence, the incident plagued Kennedy for decades.

Forty years on, historians and political analysts remain divided over whether Kennedy effectively dropped the keys to the White House that terrible night. His only run for the presidency in 1980 fizzled. But American political life is replete with second acts of contrite politicians who recover from scandal, and American voters have long shown a remarkable capacity for forgiveness. After Chappaquiddick, Massachusetts voters re-elected Kennedy to the US Senate seven times.

On 18 July 1969, 37-year-old Kennedy attended a private party at a cottage on Chappaquiddick Island off Martha's Vineyard. It had been a tough decade for the Kennedy family's youngest son – he had seen two brothers felled by assassins' bullets, and in 1964 was in a place crash in which the pilot was killed.

Just after 11pm he and Kopechne, a former campaign aide to Robert Kennedy, left the party. Kennedy told friends he was tired and would drive himself and Kopechne back to their respective motels and wanted to catch the last ferry off the island. But Kopechne left her purse and motel key at the cottage, and Kennedy turned away from the ferry terminal toward a secluded beach, in what he later said was a mistake caused by the dark and by exhaustion.

As they approached the beach, Kennedy drove his car off the Dike bridge into a tidal pool. He escaped, but Kopechne was trapped under the car.

Panicked, terrified and dazed from a concussion, Kennedy stumbled back to the cottage, which did not have a phone. He and two friends rushed back to the scene but were again unable to free Kopechne.

Kennedy did not report the accident until about 10 hours later, provoking enduring speculation that he was busy orchestrating a cover-up.

Kennedy was ultimately found guilty of leaving the scene of an accident and sentenced to two months in jail, suspended. A judge who led an inquest found probable cause that Kennedy was negligent and contributed to Kopechne's death, and found that he had lied when he said he drove toward the bridge instead of the ferry by mistake. Authorities never prosecuted.

In a televised statement, Kennedy denied "immoral conduct" and said he had not been drunk.

The Chappaquiddick incident derailed any chance of Kennedy taking on Richard Nixon in 1972, when he otherwise would have ridden a wave of enthusiasm for his popular late brothers. After years of vacillation, Kennedy made what historians say was a half-hearted effort to beat Jimmy Carter for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1980. His lack of focus, along with a disastrous television interview with journalist Roger Mudd, doomed his bid as much Chappaquiddick, historians say.

"He seemed to be doing it because he was expected to, not because he had anything he wanted to achieve," Columbia University historian Alan Brinkley said.

But Victor Navasky, chairman of the Columbia Journalism Review and author of Kennedy Justice, on Robert Kennedy's term as attorney general, said that in any national race, opponents would have bludgeoned him with Chappaquiddick.

"It represented not just a public relations problem but a real character flaw problem," he said.

A blaze from a one-alarm fire at a Claymont steel company sent an employee to the hospital Monday night after he suffered smoke inhalation. The man, a worker at Evraz Claymont Steel Company, formerly known asCitiSteel, was taken to Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pa

Claymont Fire Company Chief Mark Harris said the fire started in a furnace refractory at 6:11 p.m. Molten steel from a container dripped onto an electrical panel and caused the blaze, Harris said. The employee was working on a crane above the container and was not able to escape without help. Firefighters had to use ropes to free him because there was no visibility inside the room, Harris said.

More than 20 employees were evacuated. Fire companies from Talleyville, Brandywine Hundred, Holloway Terrace, Five Points and Wilmington helped extinguish the blaze. The fire was under control at 7:26 p.m.

Harris said employees were not allowed back into the unit that caught fire because of smoldering metal inside.

Harris also said the unit had smoke damage but it was not extensive. The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating.

Johnson quickly shot to frontrunner status, raising questions about whether he'd become the next incarnation of Scottish chanteuse Susan Boyle, albeit one in cargo shorts who prefers classic rock to "Les Misérables."

In the days since his performance, the British press has been reporting exhaustively on Johnson's personal history, just as it did following Boyle's appearance on "Britain's Got Talent" in April. The 27-year-old is a schoolteacher from Reading, England, who has fallen short in other attempts to make it big as a singer. According to The Daily Mirror, he has been in two boy bands, Upfrunt and Streetlevel, but neither of them ever caught on. Essentially, people are getting an email, or a Facebook request (and any other of the various forms of social media request) to simply change their status for one hour in order to ask for prayers for Avi Ben Stella, a 12 year old child who is now in a coma after being seriously injured in a car crash.

No one is as yet quite sure: is there an Avi Ben Stella, was someone of that name in a car crash? Or is it simply a joke of some kind, although as yet the punchline is undelivered?

My supposition is that this is a joke, a game, of some sort. For one of the terms that has been replicating across the internet is "Avi Ben Stella Snopes".....and where would you go to try and find out the truth of an online rumor? Yes, Snopes.

But if the search engines are thoroughly polluted with that serach term, you're most unlikely to find the Snopes entry, are you? You can only get there by using the engine on Snopes' own site.

ST. CHARLES, MO (KTVI-FOX2now.com) - It's called one of the most important economic weekends of the year for businesses in historic downtown St. Charles. The annual Festival of the Little Hills is underway on Main Street. Organizers think as many as 350-thousand people could come to the festival. It started on Friday and will continue through Sunday.

Retailers hope that many potential customers will help their bottom lines in what still a tough economy. At Jake's on Main, life is good when the festival opens up. The manager says business is tremendous during the festival.

It is a similar story at Lewis and Clark's Restaurant. The weekend is circled as a major money maker.

From the funnel cake to furniture, jewelry to artwork, there is something for everyone at the Festival of the Little Hills.

Some 350 booths are spread out along Main Street and the riverfront.

Festival Chairperson Linda Jackson-Regot says between two and three hundred thousand people usually come out. With the mild weather this weekend, she expects that number to jump to nearly 350,000.

The festival is open from 9:30AM until 10:00PM on Saturday and 9:30AM until 5:00PM on Sunday.

Hurricane Bill, upgraded to a Category 4 storm, tore across the Atlantic Wednesday with raging winds nearing 135 mph, threatening a possible strike near Bermuda in a few days, meteorologists reported.

Forecasters predicted the hurricane could get even stronger.

"The wind sheer is light and the waters are warm," said Todd Kimberlain, a forecaster at the National Hurricane Center.

"Those are two essential ingredients not just for the formation, but also the maintenance, of hurricanes."

Early Wednesday, Bill was centered about 460 miles east of the Leeward Islands and was expected to pass them later in the day or by early Thursday.

The most significant threat could be to Bermuda, which the storm could hit in three or four days, Kimberlain said.

It also could move directly between Bermuda and the eastern coast of the U.S. without making landfall.

Either way, people near the coast can expect wave swells and rip currents in the next few days, Kimberlain said.

Meanwhile, Ana, the first named storm of the Atlantic season, was downgraded to a tropical depression and dissipated before reaching Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

The Vikings, who had courted Favre throughout the off-season only to be left empty-handed on the eve of training camp, planned to address the media later Tuesday. When Favre initially said he would not come back, Coach Brad Childress said the team would move forward with the quarterbacks on its roster and had no interest in Favre.

But now, Favre is en route to the Vikings training camp. He and his wife Deanna were spotted boarding a team plane at the Hattiesburg, Miss. airport.

The U-turn in Favre’s future wasn’t a complete surprise. He had left the door slightly open for a return – likely only to the Vikings – back in July, but almost everyone expected that he wouldn’t make a move until the regular season. Instead, Favre becomes the Vikings starter ahead of Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson with three preseason games remaining. He is already familiar with the offense run by his friend, the Vikings offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell. The Vikings have viewed Favre, 39, as the final piece needed to make them the N.F.C. favorite to reach the Super Bowl.

Favre too had viewed the Vikings as a perfect fit for him, because of his familiarity with the N.F.C. North. Favre also said earlier this year that he was motivated to come back last season in part to get back at Packers General Manager Ted Thompson, who shipped Favre to the Jets.

The fraternity of syndicated columnists is extremely small, once filling a single page in a book called "The Capitol Source." The number who actually can make a living at it is smaller still.

Bob Novak was unusual in many ways. He wrote his column with a partner, the late Rowland Evans, which is extremely rare and no one else currently does it. He came up at a time before cable TV and before all-news radio stations when people read the newspapers to find out what was going on.

Novak was known for being well-connected in Washington, but not many may know that in recent years he was welcomed into the Roman Catholic church. Novak was a descendant of Russian Jews and was famous for a tough exterior through which few could penetrate. But apparently God got through! In an interview with journalist Barbara Matusow published in Washingtonian magazine last November, Novak spoke of that conversion and the peace it had given him. His last words in that interview were "pray for me." I suspect many did and today one trusts those prayers have been fully answered.

Mr. Novak's "Inside Report" syndicated column, shared for 30 years with the late Rowland Evans, was important reading for anyone who wanted to know what was happening in Washington. Mr. Novak and Evans broke stories about presidential politics, fiscal policy and intra-party feuds. Their journalism, which reported leaks from the highest sources of government, often had embarrassing consequences for politicians.

In recent years, Mr. Novak was best known for publicly identifying CIA operative Valerie Plame. His July 14, 2003, column was printed days after Plame's husband, former U.S. ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV, publicly claimed that the Bush White House had knowingly distorted intelligence that Iraq tried to obtain uranium from Africa.

The column triggered a lengthy federal investigation into the Plame leak and resulted in the 2007 conviction of a top vice presidential aide, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, for perjury and obstruction of justice. President George W. Bush later commuted Libby's prison term.

Mr. Novak was accused by prominent journalists of being a pawn in a government retribution campaign against Wilson. Mr. Novak, who had called the U.S. invasion of Iraq "unjustified," denied the allegation.

He wrote that his initial column was meant to ask why Wilson had been sent on a CIA fact-finding mission involving the uranium. Then-Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage mentioned Plame's CIA position to Mr. Novak, and Bush aide Karl Rove confirmed it.

In a 2006 column, Mr. Novak wrote that Armitage "did not slip me this information as idle chitchat. . . . He made clear he considered it especially suited for my column." Armitage told The Washington Post that his disclosure to Mr. Novak was made in an offhand manner and that he did not know why Plame's husband was sent to Africa.

Mr. Novak lamented that the Plame story would "forever be part of my public identity" despite having written columns he said were more important.

Until the Plame controversy, Mr. Novak had largely been known as a strong anti-Communist in his foreign policy views. He also was an leading advocate of supply-side economics, a belief that tax cuts would lead to widespread financial prosperity.

David Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union lobbying organization, said that Mr. Novak helped transform supply-side economics from a fringe idea into a tenet of President Ronald Reagan's economic policy. Keene called Mr. Novak "a giant of the profession" who "gave respectability and visibility to conservative ideas and positions in the 1970s, when they were mostly dismissed."

Mr. Novak was a congressional reporter for the Associated Press and the Wall Street Journal before he teamed with Evans in 1963 to write a Washington-based political column for the old New York Herald-Tribune. "Inside Report" ran in almost 300 papers nationally, including The Post. Mr. Novak continued the column after Evans's retirement in 1993. Evans died in 2001.

Hi Rachel, thanks for writing and I will try my best to assist you. Platform mediumship and gallery readings can be a great experience and much comfort to so many.

When it comes to platform mediumship and gallery readings everyone is used to seeing the more main stream public Medium as John Edward. John is known all over the world for his extraordinary gift of connecting individuals with their loved ones who have crossed over. This takes much focus, responsibility, hard work and dedication in who he is as an individual working with his gifts. Most individual do not understand what it is to do this work and the amount of time and energy that goes into what we do. I often hear individuals say that this is a gift ( which it is and we all have) that it is unbelievable that anyone can talk to deceased individuals. Many will not understand it and say it is not real. I have even seen someone get a message delivered to them and they negate it, as they are too afraid of the truth that was given to them.

Being a medium is something that is a passion and a life in which you live constantly on a platform of everything that is going on around you. When a good Medium does this work with such ease it makes it all look too simple to the normal individual. But many do not understand or know what goes into being a good Medium. Many believe that being a Medium is filled with glamour and everyone will become rich and famous. Not true. It takes a very special individual to be recognized in this way. As I said there is much responsibility, time and focus to be a great Medium. Mainly by the time an individual works to develop their gifts with the ability to bring them closer to the lime light they become distracted with an ego and never make the cut. Most so-called Mediums do not take the time to work, learn or understand their own stuff before they are selling themselves as a Medium to the main stream public. Mainly by calling themselves a Medium when they do not even understand what a Medium is themselves. Once again it is taking the time to understand and develop what it is they are working with. They will read a few books because they have something going on around them, a recognition that they see, hear, or know something that is hard to explain. Some individuals have even taken some classes but when it gets to the point of actually having to do some work or look at the truth of everything, they will run in the opposite direction. These individuals really did not take the time to do their work. I once had a young woman tell me she is a true Medium and that she did not have to develop what was just natural for her. This is all very wonderful, except for the fact that she was giving messages to others that were all fear based. She did not really understand the responsibility it was to work with others in this way. She was also more of a intuitive psychic that just wanted to be known as a Medium for her own prestige.

Developing your Mediumship if that is what calls to you, takes more than one weekend to work with to develop. It takes the time to develop it over a course of months and years to be able to understand the basics and then more importantly to understand who you are and if this is for you.

Just about any good Medium will tell you the importance to doing their own work and developing how to interpret the messages they are receiving. Remember my articles about Spirit Guides and Angels? That they never tell you anything fearful or negative and they most certainly do not. It is always going to be the interpretation of the Medium in how they receive their messages from those in spirit, to then be able to deliver them back to you with accuracy. This is why a Medium takes the time to develop their gifts, to know how they are receiving (seeing, hearing, feeling, etc...) what they are receiving and what all of it is about. As in my earlier articles I wrote the differences in psychic, psychic mediums and mediums, which is very important to know these three different working styles. As to then know what kind of messages you will be receiving and what style in which it will be delivered.

At a Gallery Reading or seeing a demonstration of Platform Mediumship there are a few things that go on. You may see that there will be one, two or sometimes up to five Mediums on the stage area. As the event gets started the Medium will introduce themselves and start to look around the room. As they are doing this they are being drawn to an area or individual that they cannot look away from. As this is happening your loved one , guide or angel is there getting the attention of the Medium working. The Medium will then start to give you information that is coming from those in the spirit world around you.

The Medium should always ask if they may speak to you. At that point the messages will be delivered to you. The Medium then cannot walk away until the message is delivered to you. Many times those in spirit will stay there until they are satisfied you have been given the message correctly. When the message is delivered correctly the Medium will then close that energy and move on to the next person. Remember those in the spirit world have a wonderful sense of humor and once again shall never tell you anything frightful or fearful; there is no need to do so. For those in spirit love you too much to harm you in any way. This can be very fun, informative, healing, and peaceful when in the hands of the right Medium.

Platform mediumship and or gallery readings is a way for you to sample and experience messages being delivered from those in spirit (loved ones, guides and angels) to individuals here in the physical. Most old school Mediums will tell you that the only messages delivered is to be from loved ones who have crossed over. I agree on many levels, but I also know there are guides and angels who have just as many important things to say to someone. That to exclude this is to not give a message that is there for someone. Many times my loved ones do not come in to give me a message, as there are different levels and things I am going through and in what I need to hear. But I will say, if all of the messages that are being delivered by a Medium on such a night as one of these, are all from just guides and angels, then this goes in that category of not being a very good Medium. There may be those rare nights that this may happen but not every time.

You will find many differences in attending a platform or a gallery reading, when one happens to venture to a Medium who is in the category of not being a true, or a good medium. This can be very disappointing and also places a bad representation of other Mediums around the world especially if no one has ever had the chance to experience a good medium at work. This can either work out well for the Medium (since no one knows the difference) or most times make a disaster to the good mediums out there, who work hard at the work.

I once had the opportunity to see what was being advertised as the worlds best psychic but who was supposed to also be a Medium. She was late arriving due to the weather and then proceeded to explain so much information that was not necessary before she even began. Everyone was given a small piece of paper and asked to write down a question, you were not told exactly why. As this individuals proceeded, she gave one story after the other answered a few questions as she kept talking about herself and then after taking a break came back to do messages. The basket was given to her with all of these pieces of paper. Being a Medium I supposed she was going to demonstrate psychometry to deliver messages around the room.

Not so, she proceeded to select a piece of paper and then open the paper, read the question and then give an answer. Well, this is not a Medium but can be a psychic. Unfortunately she kept saying she was a Medium. No Medium needs to have you write questions on paper and then open the paper, read the question to get your answer. This then is a not good Medium. At one time she was even very rude to an audience member and was embarrassing this individual in front of everyone. I did not find this acceptable as there is no reason to go there in the first place. As everyone was laughing at that individual I sat there sending love. Even if all of it was true this went over the line of professionalism.
The night ran very late as there were those who needed to go to work the next day, what started at six thirty that night, lasted to over twelve midnight. For every question she read she needed to talk more about herself. That was a total disaster.

On a brighter side. I once had the opportunity to go and see John Edward here in Maryland and I was so delighted, not just with the messages he was delivering to those in the audience. But also to see and know his energy and light that was around him. It is very rare for me to be able to see another in this line of work that is a pure vehicle and I was in heaven just watching him work. His integrity stands alone and speaks very well for him in all that he does. The room was filled with individuals just excited to be there and hoping for a message from their loved ones also. Even though John did not get to everyone in the room that night, the messages he did give to those few, were also messages to others around the room. This is true of many messages that are delivered to an audience in any size room. Listen when the Medium is speaking because there will always be something there for each individual sitting in that same area. It may not be delivered straight to you, but you will feel and know when it resonates with you.

I have seen and experienced many gallery readings and platform work demonstrations in doing this work all of my life. I have been a participant to many galleries where there were a few Mediums who were brand new to those that were a total disaster. I worked hard at understanding what it takes and then the time came for me to create the Spirit Speaks Galleries. I do this as an honor of celebrating those in spirit to bring love, healing, closure, independence and more to those who needed to hear from their loved ones, guides and angels. The Humboldt Tea Party Patriots are looking for a few good patriots to represent them at what's being dubbed the “largest tea party in history.”
On Aug. 28, protesters from around the state are expected to descend on the Capitol Building in Sacramento, where they will speak out against what they perceive to be an out-of-control government that is infringing on their freedoms and
overburdening industries such as mining, construction, ranching and farming.
”Those we have chosen for the privilege to represent us are strangling this great state,” the Humboldt Tea Party Patriots said in a press release.
According to the release, the Aug. 28 protest will gather like-minded people intent on delivering the message to Sacramento and Washington, D.C., that they wish to be
left alone.
Specifically, the press release states that the Humboldt Tea Party Patriots believe in free market policies, wish to see the Endangered Species Act rescinded or revised, wish to see the repeal of Assembly Bill 32 and generally want fiscal responsibility and limited government.
Humboldt Tea Party Patriots are looking to send a busload of locals down to Sacramento for the rally on Aug. 28, and also for some volunteers to ride on the Tea Party Express, a cross-country bus tour of tea parties scheduled to culminate with a march on Washington, D.C., on Sept. 12.

When Maya Rupert wrote an article frowning at several Southern states for officially celebrating Confederate History Month, Internet critics lined up to fire back. ¶ But this time, they arrived with more than harsh words. ¶ The 28-year-old Los Angeles attorney's detractors dug up a photo of her and posted it, along with details of political contributions she'd made, in an online discussion of the article she wrote for the L.A. Watts Times. They called their finds evidence of her bias on the emotionally charged subject. ¶ "It really surprised me when I found out that people could see how much I donated to Obama," Rupert said, referring to the $400 she gave to the candidate last year, the record of which is available through several online watchdog sites. ¶ After that, Rupert

said, "they pulled a picture off my firm's website and said, 'Of course she's black.' " ¶ Until recently, personal information has been scattered across cyberspace, to be found or not depending on the luck and sophistication of the searcher. But a new crop of "snooper" sites is making it easier than ever for anyone with Internet access to assemble the information into a digital portrait. ¶ "It's amazing what you can Google," one of the people who criticized Rupert wrote in an online forum. ¶ Rupert has since learned that the photo and campaign contributions were just a small part of her online "footprint" -- an expansive dossier that she did not realize was available to anyone searching her name. ¶ On Snitch.name, users can enter a name -- their own or someone else's -- and watch as the site culls information from dozens of search engines, social networks and directories.

Rupert entered her name into Snitch last week, and within a minute she was presented with photos of herself, details of her California Bar membership and the names and addresses of her sister and parents.

"I'm a fan of open records and a fan of a lot of information being public," she said. "But there's public," and then there's the unfettered Web where "at the touch of a button, I can find out private information about you and use that for other purposes."

"It's really creepy," she said.

Looking in the digital mirror

Online information about consumers comes from several sources. Public records such as campaign contributions, property sales and court cases are increasingly posted on the Internet. At the same time, marketers are collecting information about consumers' Web browsing and buying habits. And then there are the thousands of online communities such as Facebook and Twitter, where users supply the personal information themselves.

In general, people have felt that their information is better protected within the walls of social networks, where they can control what is posted and approve who can view it. But privacy experts warn against being lulled into a false sense of security.

"The rule of thumb for Internet privacy is that you don't let it get out there in the first place," said Pam Dixon, founder of the World Privacy Forum. The moment information is openly accessible online, it can be -- and often is -- copied from one site to another, making it extremely onerous to stamp out even if it's deleted from the original site.

"It's not like chasing Alice in Wonderland down a rabbit hole," Dixon said. "It's like chasing a hundred Alices down a hundred rabbit holes."

In the course of exploring her own digital footprint, Rupert saw photos and information from a social networking profile she'd started in 2003 on Friendster.com, thinking that only her friends would be able to see it. Little did she know that, years later, much of the material would end up exposed to the open Web. Details from her MySpace profile had also been copied to third-party sites she'd never heard of, where they remained accessible no matter whether she removed the material from MySpace.

Even if you don't post any information about yourself online, however, maintaining a low profile can be a challenge.

Sites such as Huffington Post's FundRace2008 can freely gather and post information about hundreds of thousands of campaign contributions, including the donor's name and address and the amount donated.

BlockShopper.com maps home sales -- including the property's sale price, its address, and the names of the buyer and seller. That data is publicly available, often from county assessor and recorder offices.

Many kinds of court documents, which can contain social security numbers and family details, are public records. And city governments can post building permit applications, complete with blueprints of private homes.

Vatche Yepremian, who runs a mortgage lending company in Glendale, said he was well acquainted with the array of public information available about him online. His footprint includes details about several properties he owns, a home remodel plan he submitted to Glendale in 2007 and various court proceedings in which he is named.

Rather than being disturbed by the availability of data, Yepremian said it has been a useful tool when deciding whether to grant applicants a loan.

"If I want to lend money to someone, I want to make sure that everything and anything they've told me is the truth," Yepremian said. Even a few years ago, verifying an applicant's claims might have required a call to a title company or a crosstown drive to inspect a property. Now the Web saves him the trouble. "It makes life much easier," he said.

Perhaps the least understood by consumers is the practice of behavioral tracking, where marketing companies log activities such as the Web pages users visit, the ads they click and the terms they search for.

Most companies say information about user activities is stored securely and anonymously.

Even so, Paul Stephens of the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse said, "an individual's patterns on the Internet can reveal a tremendous amount of information about them, and it can be a gold mine for companies that want to market to you."

On Day 40, right before the eviction vote, Jeff decided to use the power of "Coup d'État" to replace Chima's nominations with his own. He nominated Jessie and Natalie for eviction. He, Chima, and his nominees were not permitted to vote. Jessie became the fifth evicted HouseGuest by a 3-2 vote, and the first member of the jury that will vote for the winner of Big Brother.

At the end of the episode, Julie Chen announced the sixth eviction episode will be a special live double eviction, with the eviction held immediately at the show's start, followed by an entire week of competitions and the seventh eviction, all in one hour.

In the sixth week, every HouseGuest was eligible to become Head of Household. Michele won the HoH competition "Hit the Road" and nominated Chima and Natalie for eviction. On Day 42 after throwing her mic into the Hot Tub, not having her mic on, and bad mouthing production, Chima was removed from the house.

A week after George Stephanopoulos' much-touted ratings victory over "Meet the Press" (and no, there wasn't tennis on NBC; just a weak lineup of guests), the David Gregory-moderated show is back on top.

"Meet the Press" had 2.99 million viewers last Sunday versus 2.68 million for ABC's "This Week," according to Nielsen Media Research.

However, the Stephanopoulos show edged out Gregory's program in the crucial 25- to 54-year-old viewer demographic.

On "Meet the Press," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker shot holes into national gun laws.

Meanwhile, Stephanopoulos interviewed everyone's favorite shouting Democrat, Howard Dean, as well as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

The CBS show, "Face the Nation," is still hanging in there in the ratings race. Moderator Bob Schieffer takes home another bronze medal with 2.39 million viewers. "Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace" attracted half that.

We can't help but wonder what fuels the ratings fluctuations. As we noted a couple of weeks ago, high-profile guests don't seem to make a difference. Does it just depend on what channel you had left on the TV from Saturday night?

The Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF 14.24, -0.09, -0.63%) , an exchange-traded fund that tracks all of the financial-services companies in the S&P 500 index, declined 0.6%.

Meanwhile, the KBW Bank Index edged up 0.2%.

Bank of America (BAC 17.39, +0.39, +2.29%) shares gained 2.3% to close at $17.39, while Citigroup (C 4.04, -0.02, -0.49%) , Wells Fargo (WFC 27.73, -0.15, -0.54%) , J.P. Morgan Chase (JPM 42.45, -0.45, -1.05%) and US Bancorp (USB 22.49, -0.06, -0.27%) all fell by 1.1% or less.

The KBW Bank Index has jumped 23% in the past month, while the Financial Select Sector SPDR has rallied 19%.

Bank stocks have risen after the sector's second-quarter results suggested that consumer loan delinquencies are starting to stabilize as the recession eases. Indeed, Citi shares were upgraded by analysts at Banc of America Securities-Merrill Lynch on Friday, partly because of stabilization in consumer credit delinquency trends.

The sector got another boost Thursday after a regulatory filing showed that Paulson & Co., one of the world's largest hedge funds, run by John Paulson, bought big stakes in lenders like Bank of America during the second quarter.

It's not clear whether Paulson still holds the stakes, but some investors took the filing as a sign that the sector is gaining support among some top institutions. See full story.

Colonial may become the largest bank failure so far this year. BB&T Corp. (BBT 28.23, +2.43, +9.42%) is expected to take over the Montgomery, Ala.-based bank as early as Friday, after the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. seizes the lender, according to reports by Bloomberg News and The Wall Street Journal's online edition. BB&T shares jumped 9.4% to close at $28.23.

Shares of E-Trade Financial (ETFC 1.35, -0.05, -3.57%) , the discount broker that has it's own troubled bank, fell 3.6% to close at $1.35.

Hedge fund firm Citadel Investment Group in a regulatory filing said it has entered into a trading plan allowing it to sell as many as 120 million E-Trade shares between the end of August and late October.

Citadel said it sold nearly 14 million shares of E-Trade earlier this week. The firm, run by Ken Griffin, invested heavily in the online broker in late 2007.

Genworth Financial (GNW 8.28, -0.47, -5.37%) fell 5% to close at $8.28. Citigroup analyst Colin Devine downgraded the insurer to sell from hold, citing "a very uncertain earnings outlook and capital position."

Whew, this just in over the night while America was sleeping, Chima Simone was quitting! The live feeds went out for an hour or so last night and when they came back there was no more Chima! She quit and will not be with Jessie in the Jury house!
This is rather an unfortunate turn of events that someone who seemed like such a strong, powerful, intelligent woman would in the end turn out to just give up and quit. The house obviously creates mental anguish and stress. This event clearly demonstrates that being in that house for so long is not as easy as many may think!
So now how does CBS deal with this? Guess America will have to wait and see, but on a positive note the producers were planning on getting rid of two house guests this week anyway so Chima saved them some trouble in that regard... Perhaps...
As Natalie said, "When they say expect the unexpected, I bet they didn't expect that!"

Organizers have canceled a lecture at the Library of Congress by the woman who became a symbol of the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal after threats caused concerns about staff safety.
Former Army reservist Lynndie England had been scheduled to discuss her biography Friday as part of a veterans forum on Capitol Hill. The book by author Gary S. Winkler is called "Tortured: Lynndie England, Abu Ghraib and the Photographs That Shocked the World."
In a notice to members, Angela Kinney, president of the Library of Congress Professional Association, says the event was canceled due to staff safety concerns.
David Moore, a Vietnam War veteran and German acquisitions specialist at the library who organized the event, says he had been receiving threats.

The University of Minnesota entered into a five-year partnership with Caribou Coffee Tuesday, making the company the official coffee of Gopher Athletics.
Starting in the 2009-10 school year, the coffee will be sold at all Gopher athletic venues, including TCF Bank Stadium in the premium suites, loge boxes, club rooms, select concessions and the Press Box and within Mariucci Arena, Williams Arena and other venues.
The partnership was secured by Gopher Sports Properties, which is a property of Learfield Sports that manages the multimedia rights for Gopher Athletics.
Nate Schultz, account executive of Gopher Sports Properties, said Caribou Coffee is developing a special Gopher-branded blend for the venues, which will also be sold in their stores.
“We’re obviously very excited to have a Minnesota-based company join us, and one with a very prominent national brand,” Schultz said. “I think the presence that they have throughout the state of Minnesota with over 200 stores and the brand and fan following that we have will be a good tie.”

NEW YORK The Philadelphia Newspaper Guild, which recently rejected a request from the city's two major newspapers to extend their contract for 30 days, has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board accusing the newspapers of bad faith bargaining.

"We are concerned that Philadelphia Newspapers delay of bargaining and its failure to disclose its bargaining proposals are tactics designed to leave the Guild membership with no leverage in the event it submits a [bankruptcy] plan that includes contract concessions and that plan is accepted," a memo from Philadelphia Newspaper Guild leaders to its members Wednesday stated.

The guild is the only one of the 15 unions at the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News that has not agreed to extend its current contract for 30 days beyond the Aug. 31 expiration date, according to Publisher Brian Tierney.

The newspapers' owner, Philadelphia Media Holdings, is in the midst of a bankruptcy that was filed in February. It is planning to submit a reorganization plan next week and had requested the unions extend contracts so that negotiations could be put off until after the reorganization is completed.

"We have 4,200 full-time and part-time employees, the guild represents about 510 people," Tierney told E&P. "We have agreements from all of the other unions to extend. Like a lot of publishers, I don't always understand the guild. But they're family and we love them and I am sure it will all work out."

Dear Guild member,

As we advised you in our last bulletin, on Monday the Guild Executive Board informed Philadelphia Newspapers that its request for a 30-day-extension of our contract prior to any collective bargaining negotiations was unacceptable. Our refusal to extend the contract on the basis proposed by the company was based, in part, on the June 16 testimony in federal court of Richard Thayer, PN's Chief Financial Officer, in which he maintained the company would not engage in collective bargaining with any of its unions until its reorganization plan is submitted. The plan is scheduled to be filed on August 31, the same day our contract expires.

In a court filing last week, the company requested an additional 60 days to submit its plan. The company's obligation to bargain with us is independent of the bankruptcy.

On Monday, we renewed our request to immediately commence collective bargaining. The company did not respond. This morning we directed our attorneys to file an Unfair Labor Practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board as a result of the Employer's refusal to bargain.

The charge was hand delivered this afternoon to the Philadelphia Regional Director of the NLRB.

We are concerned that Philadelphia Newspapers delay of bargaining and its failure to disclose its bargaining proposals are tactics designed to leave the Guild membership with no leverage in the event it submits a plan that includes contract concessions and that plan is accepted.

In bankruptcy court yesterday a company attorney informed the court that all but one of its unions had agreed to 30-day-extensions. It all began last fall with a chance encounter between a rocker and an animal-rights advocate in their hometown, Louisville, Ky. Jim James — singer, songwriter and guitarist of the band My Morning Jacket — was dining out with relatives when the activist Jenny Brown, whom he had never met, approached him with a proposition. How about holding a concert to benefit the farm animal sanctuary that she ran in Woodstock, N.Y., Ms. Brown asked him.

Mr. James gave her his e-mail address, told her to keep in touch and went his way, but the proposal intrigued him. Several months later he came up with what he figured was a better way to help.

A few days after George Harrison’s death in 2001 Mr. James locked himself in an old bathroom at a farm near Louisville and recorded six of Mr. Harrison’s songs: an intimate, modest tribute of voice and acoustic guitar. The recordings had been shelved since then, and Mr. James said he wasn’t sure they would ever be released, until he met Ms. Brown.

On Tuesday an EP with the six Harrison tracks hits stores, and part of the proceeds will go toward Ms. Brown’s Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, a refuge for 150 or so abused, abandoned or sick farm animals, including a three-legged goat named Albie, a blind chicken named Coco and a 700-pound pig named Judy, after Ms. Brown’s mother.

To Mr. James there’s a clear connection between much that Mr. Harrison believed in and the work Ms. Brown does at the sanctuary.

“George was one of those people that always seemed to be a good inspiration for other humans, seemed like he was a very socially conscious person, a very responsible person,” Mr. James said. He didn’t know Mr. Harrison, he added, but described himself as an admirer of his music and character.

“George was always trying to put the good message out there,” Mr. James added. “And I think that’s what Jenny has been doing at the farm.”

Ms. Brown and her husband, Doug Abel, opened the sanctuary in 2004, leaving behind careers in film and television. (She was an associate producer of the ABC News special “Report from Ground Zero,” and he was an editor of the Oscar-winning documentary “Fog of War.”) Because they rely primarily on donations to keep the farm going, she said she couldn’t miss the opportunity to recruit Mr. James’s help.

While visiting her mother in Louisville she had bumped into him the day before at an outdoor cafe, and though she immediately recognized him, she left without saying a word.

That their paths would cross again the following night “must have been some kind of sign,” Ms. Brown said.

“Jim was leaving the restaurant and I could feel myself, like, ‘O.K., Jenny, you’ve got to do it,’ ” she recalled. “I told him I was sorry to bother him and that it was unusual how we sat next to each other two days in a row, and here’s what I do and, boy, wouldn’t it be a dream come true if he could lend his support to our mission.”

As it turned out, Mr. James and Ms. Brown found that they had more than just their hometown in common. She’s a vegan, and he’s a vegetarian, as Mr. Harrison was. And they both say they feel they are no better than, for example, a pig or a rooster — a belief that Mr. Harrison also shared, his widow, Olivia Harrison, said.

“He was the kind of guy who always put the bug outside,” Ms Harrison said in a telephone interview from England. “He never stomped on an ant or a spider.”

That a tribute to him will help support a home for abused farm animals is “an appropriate cause,” she continued.

The EP, which Mr. James is releasing under the moniker Yim Yames (“I just wanted to make my existing name funny sounding,” he said), was recorded at the Gallrein Farms in Shelbyville, in a plumbingless bathroom that is part of the same studio where My Morning Jacket recorded its first albums.

It includes four songs from Mr. Harrison’s critically acclaimed “All Things Must Pass,” which he released after the breakup of the Beatles, and two of the songs he wrote for the band, “Long, Long, Long” and “Love You To.” (Mr. James’s songs are also available for download purchase at yimyames.com.)

The Harrison recording is Mr. James’s first solo venture, but not his first charitable foray. He has donated time to the musicians’ outreach project Sweet Home New Orleans, helped raise money for the Center for Women and Families in Louisville and, in April, performed at Radio City Music Hall on a bill that included Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, among others, to benefit transcendental meditation, which Mr. Harrison helped popularize.

“I’m just lucky that I’m making a living with my music,” Mr. James said. “And if I can help.”

Kate says that despite having "more peace" living alone with her eight kids in their home in Pennsylvania, she still often wakes up and feels "a lot like a failure" for her unsuccessful marriage.

I want to believe Josh Hamilton but not because I'm a diehard Rangers fan. When I enter the Rangers clubhouse, he's not one of the four or five guys I tend to talk to every visit.
But when I see Hamilton look sincerely apologetic about his drinking binge in January, when I listen to him say it hasn't happened in those seven months since and that this was his one and only slip-up in nearly four years of recovery from addiction, I want to believe in him.
Because I want to believe in me.
When you think about it, Josh and I are pretty much the same guy other than two things. He is covered with tattoos and has a million dollar thing-of-beauty baseball swing.
I once wanted to get a Top Cat tattoo in Austin, but my daughter wouldn't let me, and I have a $2 thing-of-ugly golf swing.
Other than that, hey, just a couple of guys who when they stop in a bar for a drink, their pictures pop up on Web sites.
(Mine show up on the really slow news days).
Hamilton watched more than three years of his professional career sail by during his darkest days of battling drugs and alcohol.
I watched the Cowboys lose to the Eagles, 44-6, last December from my room at Parkland Hospital after suffering a fractured skull of undetermined origin.
When Josh says he's foggy on the details of his drinking in Arizona, I'm right there with him in the fog. How I got into an ambulance to go to Parkland will remain one of my life's little mysteries.
That's what happens when you have a blood alcohol level of .26.
I do want to mention that I wasn't driving that night. I wish I could report that I stopped drinking after that incident.
I'd like to say that having those staples and stitches removed from the back of my head with no anesthetic was painful enough to teach me a lesson I should have learned the first time my kids asked, "Daddy, why are you drinking?"
But, as is the case with Josh and millions of others, it took a whole series of incidents and lessons before anything meaningful began to win the battle against denial.
My Parkland doctor even told me that despite a sound recovery from the fractured skull, seizures were possible in the next nine months. Excessive drinking could even trigger them.
I figured that seizures were things that happened to losers. Besides, I had a lot of stress at work (the catch-all excuse that works for everyone).
On May 7, I got another ride in an ambulance. This one I actually remember. We had just about finished an episode of The Ben and Skin Show on 105.3 The Fan when I hit the deck, having suffered my first (and hopefully last) seizure.
Troy Hughes, the board operator and a former Eagle Scout, swung into action, pouncing on me and making sure I didn't swallow my tongue. I'm not completely sure this was necessary, I think Troy always had a thing for me, but let's go with his story.
Ben and Skin accompanied me to the emergency room. To be honest, they did some of their best work there.
At this point – perhaps fearful of missing what few episodes of that underrated radio show remained – I decided to stop drinking for a while.
I have never been to rehab or an AA meeting – although I know people whose lives have been turned around by one or the other – but have read enough and I know enough not to say "I stopped drinking for good."
I can't even say that's necessarily the goal. I would like to be that distinguished gentleman who can have two glasses of red wine with a nice steak and stop drinking for the rest of the night, but I have my doubts.
One, I'm not totally certain that guy exists other than in commercials. Two, I much prefer vodka to wine, and two glasses is like a warm-up act. Three, in the first three decades of my drinking career I was never that guy so I'm not totally confident he's in my future.
So, we're at three months without a drink now, but who's counting? I haven't done anything heroic by any stretch of the imagination. I have simply tried to understand my life and get it in order.
In the same way, I certainly don't think of Hamilton as any kind of hero although he is viewed in that manner by the millions of baseball fans who voted him a starting outfielder in the All-Star Game. I know Hamilton doesn't look at himself in that light.
He has to fight drugs beyond alcohol, which I and many others do not. Maybe that means he has more demons to slay. But a hero?
He's a guy who came this close to throwing away athletic gifts only a select few can imagine.
He's a human who, in recovery, is trying to make the most of his life for his family and friends and, as a professional athlete, his teammates.
The fact that he lost a battle last January does nothing to diminish what he's trying to accomplish.
He might hope to win a World Series or a home run title. He might hope to sign a long-term, mega-million dollar contract. But that's not Josh Hamilton's ultimate goal.
His goal is the same as lots of people reading this. It's the same as millions more whose thoughts and actions are controlled by alcohol or drugs rather than the other way around.
It's the same as mine.

Mary Primis had already taught several high-intensity fitness classes that day, putting dozens of students through their sweaty paces while barely breaking one herself.
As she kicked off the last class of the evening at a health club in the Pittsburgh suburbs — Latin impact dance aerobics — the 26-year-old Primis shared some big, happy news with the health-conscious women lined up in front of her: She was 10 weeks' pregnant with her first child.
It was 8 p.m. Tuesday, prime time for working out. The aerobics room at LA Fitness was packed with about 20 women. Among Primis' students that night were Heidi Overmier, a hardworking single mom; Betsy Gannon, an X-ray technician who loved walking her dog; and Jody Billingsley, who sold medical supplies and traveled to Tampa, Fla., this year to watch her beloved Pittsburgh Steelers win the Super Bowl.
A few minutes into the routine, a man in black workout clothes entered the room. None of the women paid any attention to him. It wasn't unusual for people to come in and out.
Then the man turned out the lights. He retrieved several guns from a duffel bag. Calmly, he opened fire on the class, spraying dozens of shots. Twelve women were hit.
As screams filled the darkened room, Primis lay in a pool of her own blood, wondering if she and her baby were going to make it. Nearby, two of the women were dead and a third mortally wounded.
The killer, 48-year-old loner George Sodini, didn't know his victims, but he knew their gender, and it was no accident that he chose this place and this time to commit murder. He was a failure with women, always had been. He wanted revenge; he'd make them pay attention.
His victims had been brought together Tuesday night by a passion for physical fitness. They were strong women, all of them. But they were no match for the gunman, who'd been plotting this rampage for at least a year.
They had a zest for living. His mantra, expressed in a Web diary: "Death Lives!"

Mary Primis taught as many as six fitness classes a day at the region's health clubs. She loved helping people get fit, and she was good at it. Even her husband of more than six years — a former personal trainer in great shape — benefited from her workouts.
"She's intense. Great workouts, focused," said Alex Primis, 29, a salesman.
She'd been in and out of their house in Moon Township all day Tuesday, teaching from morning till night. Alex himself took part in her 6:20 p.m. step class at another club.
"See you at home," he told her when it was over.
Tuesday began normally enough for Overmier, 46, a sales manager at an amusement park. Knowing that a colleague was stressed about work, she left a bagel on his desk before he got in. Jeff Filicko preferred doughnuts, but he appreciated the gesture.
"It's always bagels. She always tried to eat healthy," recalled Filicko, the park's public relations manager.
Later on, Overmier attended an employee picnic, then a social event hosted by a Pittsburgh tourism group. After stopping briefly at her Carnegie home, she drove to LA Fitness.
"She took care of herself," said her sister, Connie Maneck. "If you look at the pictures, she doesn't look 46. She looks 30. I think it was her energy, so positive about everything."
Jody Billingsley's job as a sales rep for a medical technology firm often had her on the road and into hospitals' operating rooms, where she helped doctors install high-tech pain-management devices. She worked long hours.
But Billingsley, 37, also knew how to have fun, cultivating a wide circle of friends. Her annual neighborhood Christmas party was a hit.
Physical fitness was another passion. A former college basketball player at the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, she often ran or biked the hills around her Mount Lebanon home. She joined LA Fitness, a sprawling new club that had opened a few months earlier on the site of a former JCPenney.
After work Tuesday, Billingsley stopped at home briefly. As she pulled out of her driveway — on her way to the gym — she flashed a smile to neighbors Diane and John Williams.
"A big wave to everyone in the neighborhood when she would drive in and drive out," said next-door neighbor Jim Christner. "I'd never once seen her with a bad attitude."

George Sodini, on the other hand, had a very bad attitude.
The computer analyst from Scott Township was desperately lonely, and he couldn't understand why women weren't attracted to him. He wrote in his diary that he hadn't had a girlfriend since 1984, hadn't had sex since 1990.
"Who knows why," he wrote. "I am not ugly or too weird."
Trying to woo young women, he made a promotional video of sorts that he posted on YouTube, giving prospective girlfriends a tour of the two-bedroom brick ranch he bought in 1996 for $79,000.
On the video, he predicts women "will really be impressed" by his matching living room furniture. The camera settles on a pile of books on the coffee table, including one titled "How to Date Young Women: For Men over 35."
"RDS says I have 15 more years to be successful at this," Sodini says in another YouTube video, a reference to R. Don Steele, the book's 69-year-old author, who dispenses dating advice in books, videos and live seminars and says men should quit being so nice to women.
"My objective is to be real and to learn to be emotional and to be able to emotionally connect with people," Sodini says. "I'm gonna post this and see what comes back."
Evidently, nothing did. As social success continued to elude him, his frustration grew. He began fantasizing about killing women at least a year ago — and formulated a plan. An "exit plan," he called it.
He searched the Internet for information about serial killers, mass murderers and guns. He also researched laws regarding corruption of minors and the age of consent, according to WPXI-TV.
On Monday and Tuesday, Sodini took off from his job as a systems analyst at a Pittsburgh law firm — where he'd worked since 1999 — "to practice my routine and make sure it is well polished," he wrote in his diary. "I need to work out every detail, there is only one shot. ... Total effort is needed." He went to LA Fitness twice on Tuesday before returning again just before sundown for the last time.
A half-hour before the shooting, he called his mother, sounding distraught. Police say he did not disclose his plans to her.

There were four guns in the duffel bag. The killer retrieved three of them.
Sodini stood between Primis and the door. With nowhere to run, she hit the floor. But she couldn't escape the bullets. The first slammed into her left shoulder as she crouched down. The second, about 30 seconds later, went into her upper back. He continued firing, shattering mirrors and plugging the walls with bullets from two 9 mm handguns.
As blood pooled around her, Primis kept still and held her breath, hoping that if the shooter approached, he would think she was dead. She lay like that for what seemed to her an eternity — but in reality was no more than a few minutes — frantic for both herself and the new life growing inside her.
And then it was over.
Sodini shot himself in the head with a .45-caliber pistol. Two women, who had fled the class, ran back in to tend to Primis, who asked one of them to call her husband.
At Allegheny General Hospital, doctors were amazed that the bullet that had slammed into her back didn't kill her, saying its trajectory should have carried it to her lungs and heart. Instead, her shoulder blade acted as a shield, deflecting the round into her ribs and lower back.
The couple got more good news when a sonogram showed that the baby, due early next year, was fine.
"She could've, almost should've, died from it. It's a miracle she's alive, and the fact the baby seems OK too is twice (a miracle)," Alex said.
The first night at the hospital, though, was rough. Primis barely slept; every time she closed her eyes, she flashed back to those awful minutes in the aerobics room.
By Friday, she was up and walking, taking the first painful steps of what is expected to be a long road to recovery.
At a candlelight vigil held in Pittsburgh two days after the shooting, people expressed anger and sadness over the massacre. And another emotion, too: disgust.
Erin Maloney, 49, of Bellevue, called Sodini "some sick SOB who couldn't get a girl. But he had a decent job, he owned his own home. He didn't have it so bad." Brooklynite Vincent Cosenza, 46, in Pittsburgh for a stamp convention, said the gunman "probably got rejected a lot. But that's part of life. You gotta deal with it."
Funerals for Overmier and Gannon were Saturday. Billingsley will be laid to rest Wednesday.

Pictures of Josh Hamilton's "wild drunken sex party" are sweeping the internet. Everybody seems to be cashing in on his blunder. It makes for great headlines.
As the conservative Christians cannibalize their own saying "I knew it wouldn't last" the non-believers exclaim no REAL change ever took place.
I do not believe that this is the place for my personal views to be vented about God and rebirth and this thing we Christians call salvation and a changed life, but it is the perfect place to remind all of us of a very key piece of information that we so easily forget:
Josh Hamilton is human.
In a statement Hamilton said: “I’m embarrassed about it for my wife Katie, for my kids and for the organization. I’m not perfect. It’s an ongoing struggle, and it’s real. It’s amazing how these things can creep back in. But I am human and I have struggles.”
Christians, atheists, Muslims, Buddhists, Jews... everyone makes mistakes. Most of us just make them behind closed doors and without cameras to reveal our missteps.
It is easy to judge the unwed pregnant teenager, the drunk driver that was arrested on Friday night, and the drug-addicted homeless man in the park because the result of their sin is obvious to the world. But there are skeleton's in everyones closet. Maybe even yours.
Hamilton is a married man with kids. He absolutely messed up, but the truth is that the failure is between him, his family, his team, and his God. Everything else is simply us getting a kick out of his misery.
As long as I have been writing news, reading news, and been absorbed in the process of understanding what news becomes front-page worthy, this kind of shock-value reporting should be old hat. But this one just rubbed me the wrong way.
While I understand the argument that his outspokenness of his personal "change" opened the door for all of this media spectacle, I also believe that there has to be a line in the sand somewhere between the right to know and purely wanting to judge and humiliate. This was not a corrupt politician or a money-grubbing CFO. This was a baseball player that messed up. And he will never, ever live it down

June's seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in Pennsylvania was 8.3 percent, flat from May's rate according to the state. The unemployment rate was up from 5.3 percent in June 2008.
The state's rate stayed below the national average, which rose to 9.5 percent in June.
The seasonally-adjusted civilian labor force — the number of people working or looking for work— fell between May and June, the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry said Friday. However, the figure was up year-over-year.
The number fell by 36,000 in June to 6,436,000. Resident employment was down 38,000 in June, while unemployment was up 2,000 for the month. Since June 2008, the labor force was up 45,000.
The hardest-hit sector in June was manufacturing, which was off 11.3 percent year-over-year.

Mass. — Some boys never grow up, Brian A. Donelson freely admits when talking about his passion for trains and model railroads.

"It was in 1946 that I got a Lionel train for Christmas from my parents," said Donelson. Asked if he still has that train, he replied, "Sure do!"

From his Shelburne Falls childhood, he "knew the 'Hoot, Toot and Whistle Railroad,'" using the local nickname for the long-defunct Hoosac Tunnel and Wilmington Railroad.

Now 70, the railroad buff is hoping to share some of his love for trains with "The Coming of the Train," the first in a two-volume set on the history and importance of rail in the region.
About 10 years ago, his concern that the history of the railroad was being forgotten sparked an interest in gathering information that he could share with historical societies — and anyone else who would appreciate the knowledge. As he became immersed in extensive research, however, the seeds of "The Coming of the Train" was planted in his mind.

"I wanted it to be more than a railroad book. In order to convey the importance of the Hoosac Tunnel and Wilmington Railroad, its impact on the industries and the people of the upper Deerfield River Valley needed to be understood," Donelson writes in the book's foreword.

He'll give a free illustrated presentation this Saturday, Aug. 8, at 7 p.m. at Papyri Books on Eagle Street. Donelson will take the audience back to the latter part of the 19th-century, when the construction of a rail line through the Hoosac Tunnel connecting the Deerfield Valley and Wilmington, Vt., affected the development of small towns in northwestern Massachusetts and southern Vermont.

"The Coming of the Train," published last year, was four years in the making, said Donelson. While not an author, he had writing experience. "As a business man for many years, I wrote letters, technical articles and newsletters."

In his quest for information, the Rowe resident was most impressed with the cooperation and assistance extended to him by the local historical societies and their curators in Monroe and Rowe and the Vermont towns of Readsboro, Whitingham and Wilmington.

"Research can be very time consuming and tedious" said Donelson. "However, when you find that one photo or document that solves a puzzle that has eluded everyone for years, it gives you great satisfaction."

The book is filled with historical photographs and includes a brief history of the four Newton brothers, who like others growing up on the banks of the Green River worked as loggers and lumbermen. But the Newtons became entrepreneurs, establishing mills and then building the Hoosac Tunnel and Wilmington Railroad.

Much has changed in the two months since the Yankees last faced the Red Sox, rendering Boston's 8-0 record in the season series entering Thursday night about as relevant to this weekend as Curt Schilling, Aaron Boone or Bucky Dent.
Of course, the Yankees ended that streak Thursday night, with a 13-6 rout, and there has been no more important change during the Yankees' march to first place in the AL East than the transformation of their bullpen from dithering to dominance in that span.
"Phil Hughes, simple as that," catcher Jorge Posada replied flatly when asked to pinpoint what has sparked that turnaround. "It sounds so simple, but he has meant that much to us this year."
Hughes' second bullpen appearance this season actually came in relief of Chien-Ming Wang against the Red Sox on June 10 in Boston. And he didn't fare particularly well, allowing two earned runs in 3-2/3 innings.
In 20 appearances since then, however, Hughes has established himself as a dominant setup man with a 1.05 ERA and 33 strikeouts over 25-2/3 innings, including a recent 16-appearance scoreless streak.
"We've been looking and looking for a seventh and eighth inning guy to get to (Mariano Rivera), and he's done a great job. Phil has made everybody better," Posada said. "He has taken the pressure away from all of the other guys with the job that he's doing, and that has allowed them to be more effective, too."
Indeed, Hughes isn't the only reliever deserving of credit for the bullpen's resurgence.
Expected setup man Brian Bruney has struggled to regain form following two stints on the disabled list with elbow problems. But Alfredo Aceves, despite some recent issues with a tired shoulder, is 7-1 with a 3.58 ERA in 28 games. Phil Coke (team-high 51 appearances), David Robertson and, most recently, Mark Melancon also have made unexpected contributions.
And Rivera is back to being himself following offseason shoulder surgery, converting 31 of 32 save chances for the season entering this series. That includes a current scoreless streak of 20-1/3 innings, the fourth longest of his career.
Rivera's lone blown save came in Boston on April 24 on Jason Bay's two-run homer in the ninth.
"Mo is still Mo," Posada said. "Mo right now is much stronger right now than he was in April because of the surgery. So with him and now Hughes, I think our bullpen has gone from a question to a strength."

Two days after a man was struck on his bike by a hit-and-run driver as he participated in a triathlon, officials at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park are reviewing their procedures.

Planning for the event began in February, about six months in advance of the E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park Triathlon.

As has been done for nearly three decades, off-duty officers were posted at intersections for the 14-mile bike portion of the race, and a park employee served as a bike course director, traveling along the route in a vehicle with cyclists.

It's something organizers say they've been doing for years without any problems. Until the morning of August 1.

Park Manager Chris Head told us officials there have handled this annual event for 28 years, even changing the course 10 years ago to deal with changes to traffic patterns and working around the Kentucky Truck Plant schedule on Chamberlain Lane.

"We scheduled around third shift letting out, so we started a little later in the morning to make sure all that traffic was out," Head said.

That's not all they did to prepare. The security detail included the help of off-duty police officers.

"We hire a company that deals specifically with crowd and traffic control," Head said. "We give them the intersections we want them to be, the intersections we know will have the most traffic value."

Despite planning, Head said nothing could have prepared organizers for what happened Saturday morning.

"Our bike course director was about a quarter of a mile away, she was actually at the intersection when the car came through," he said. "She called and said that there had been an accident and that the police were handling the driver and that I needed to get out there to check on the person injured."

Around 8 a.m., police say 25-year-old Kenneth Yates was speeding on Chamberlain Lane when he hit cyclist John Carr from behind. Police say Yates kept going and was stopped by an off-duty officer working the event.

A commenter on WAVE 3's website who said he took part in Saturday's triathlon had this to say about road conditions before the accident:

"I was a participant in the Sawyer triathlon. I can tell you that the way the event is organized there were not cyclists riding along side each other. There was occasional passing, but for the most part the riders were pretty well strung out along the course and staying to the right-hand side of the roads. Chamberlain Lane (two lanes each direction)itself had very light traffic during the race. I would estimate that I did not see more than 20 cars in 3 to 4 miles of riding. This was all about some one disregarding dui laws (as well as other laws) at 8 am in the morning."

LMPD spokesperson Alicia Smiley says Louisville Metro Police were not responsible for the security detail for this event, and didn't get involved until Carr was struck. That's when officers were dispatched to handle the hit-and-run ultimately shutting down part of Chamberlain Lane for their investigation and ultimately the race, according to Head.

For a variety of reasons that are still relatively unknown, Eric Mangini and George Kokinis haven’t provided any clarity to the Cleveland Browns’ QB picture. At this point, the only thing that we can say (almost) for sure is that the Browns QB depth is better with third stringer Brett Ratliff than they were with Ken Dorsey a season ago. And yet, because it is the Browns and because it is the quarterback position people can’t stop talking about the matchup of Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn. It even goes so far that this morning ESPN’s James Walker talked of combining the two players into a hybrid QB named “Brady Anderson.”

You know Derek Anderson. He has the rocket arm. He had one solid season when he got to be a Pro Bowl alternate before succumbing to the pressures, injuries and in all fairness the receivers’ drops a season ago. And then there is Brady Quinn. He is the pretty boy. The uber-marketable wanna-be face of the franchise who has touch on shorter and intermediate routes. He is the guy with leadership skills and all those intangibles that get reserved for players like Joe Montana and Tom Brady. Except that we really have no idea if he actually has that at all.

I know it is fun for some people to constantly argue back and forth between the two quarterbacks, but it is an unwinnable argument. The fact remains that we kind of know what we have in Derek Anderson. He has played in 31 games for the Browns and has a cumulative 75.1 QB rating over 927 attempts. Out of those attempts he has 506 completions, 43 touchdowns, and 35 interceptions. But what do we know about Brady Quinn?

I hear crickets.

Brady Quinn has played in four regular season games. He has made 97 pass attempts with 48 completions. With those completions, Brady Quinn has two touchdowns and two interceptions. We know nothing about Brady Quinn.

Honestly, looking at his stat sheet the craziest thing of all is that Quinn has only experienced being sacked once in his two-year NFL career to date. That means we don’t know anything about him situationally. How does he play with his back against the wall? How does he play after getting plastered to the field with the clock running down at the end of a half?

I know that I won’t be able to stop the debate. Trying to stop a QB debate in Cleveland is like trying to stop Marisa Miller from being attractive. What I do know is that it is Brady Quinn’s turn. Much like with Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, we can’t go on forever not knowing anything about a player on our roster. I have said it once and I will say it again. I have no idea if Brady Quinn is that born leader, face of the franchise with intangibles for days, but I know that I want to find out this season. Then, and only then, can we have a truly honest debate about these two quarterbacks.
