british open leaderboard 2009

british open leaderboard 2009

Tom Watson was the story of round 1 of the Open Championship as the 59 year old climbed the British Open 2009 leaderboard. He started today's round 2 just one shot off the lead and quickly made birdie on hole 1 to take sole posession of the lead. At that point round 1 leader Miguel Jimenez had already finished his round 2 and had stumbled with a 3 over par on the day, leaving him at -3 for the tourney.

However, Watson couldn't carry over his excellent play from the first 19 holes of the Open Championship. He is currently heading to hole 7 after bogeying four out of the last five holes to fall to -2 for the tournament, good for a 14th place tie.

The wind today is definitely going to be a factor which will open the door for players who need to make up strokes as the leaders come back to the pack a little. The wind is a constant 10 miles per hour with higher gusts.

Tiger Woods teed off about a half hour ago and approaches the third hole after making par on the first two holes. He still sits at +1 overall, currently tied for 44th place. He seems to be striking the ball a lot better than yesterday so far.

The current leader is Steve Marino who has already finished up his round 2 with a 2 under par to add to his 3 under yesterday. He stands alone at the top of the leaderboard at -5, one stroke ahead of a group of four players at -4, all of who are either still playing or have yet to tee off. So we'll see if a -5 is good enough for the lead at the end of the day...in these windy conditions it may be.
