Four students at the University of Delaware have been identified with "probable" cases of swine flu, the University of Delaware announced in a special health alert to staff and in a notice on its web site tonight.

The students, who were experiencing mild flu like symptoms, were treated at the university's health services center on Monday, and the Division of Public Health received preliminary test results confirming the probable cases on Tuesday, the university said.

None of the four students have traveled to Mexico recently, said Jay Lynch, health and social services department spokesman. One had been to New Jersey, one to Florida and one to Chicago over spring break, however. Officials are unsure how the students may have come in contact with the illness, he said.

Nine soldiers in a U.S.-made armored personnel carrier were killed in a roadside blast in southeastern Turkey, army chief Gen. Ilker Basbug said Wednesday. (UPDATED)

A tank and an M-113 armored personnel carrier were on a mission to secure the region before the passage of a military convoy when the explosion occurred, he said in a televised press conference.

"The personnel carrier has around 4-4.5 centimeters of armor underneath. These explosives must have been strong to cause such damage. According to our initial assessment, it is likely to be a homemade explosive," he said, adding a probe was launched on the incident.

"Most probably, it was remote-controlled or detonated by cable," he said.

This book is a memoir written about the author's family and experiences growing up. I liked the themes of family solidarity, sibling friendship, and putting your family first. It was fun to read about the people that Nicholas Sparks' other books are based on. Overall though, the book was just a little ho-hum for me. Like this review, it just didn't have any- SPARK. I enjoyed it but I was never so drawn in that I could not easily put it down and when I did put it down, I did not easily pick it back up again. I think it is something more substantial based on content but the writing doesn't quite qualify it for a hearty endorsement.

Mayde Creek High School Navy Junior ROTC program commissioned its first reserve officers Wednesday. This was the first Navy commissioning in Katy Independent School District.

The program is a brand new Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Unit at Mayde Creek High School. Currently, it is the only naval unit in KISD.

“We just started up this year,” Cpt. James Kilpatrick said. “Part of the program consists of a commissioning where we become actually part of the official Navy ROTC program.”

With about have about 100 cadets, the unit has been training in full military outfit, practicing marches and going to drill meets.

The program is unique in the high school curriculum, focused entirely on citizenship development.

The quake had a magnitude of 5.6 and was centered near Chilpancingo, about 130 miles (210 kilometers) southwest of Mexico City or 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the resort of Acapulco, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Frankie Manning, the legendary city dancer who helped create the Lindy Hop in the 1930s, died early this morning of complications from pneumonia.

He was a month away from his 95th birthday, for which friends had been planning a party and tribute.

Manning, who was hospitalized 10 days ago, had been suffering physical problems since he took a fall last year.

Until then, he had remained an active dancer and had told friends he was looking forward to dancing at next month's party. There was no immediate announcement this morning on whether FrankieFest ‘95, scheduled for May 21-25 with dancing competitions, music and instruction, will continue as a memorial tribute.

Manning and his partner Fredi Washington are credited with developing the Lindy Hop's first "aerial" step in a 1935 competition at the Savoy Ballroom.

Beatrice Arthur, the Tony- and Emmy-winning actress best known for her role as Dorothy Zbornak in TV's "The Golden Girls," has passed away. She was 86 and was suffering from cancer, according to the Associated Press.

The actress died early today at her home in Los Angeles with her family by her side, said family spokesman Dan Watt. He did not give further details.

Tall and husky voiced, Arthur won her biggest audiences for her television roles in NBC's "The Golden Girls" (1985-1992) and CBS' "Maude" (1972-1978). But it was on the stage that she began and ended her career. In 1966, she won the Tony award for best featured actress in a musical for "Mame," in which she co-starred with Angela Lansbury.

Shares of online DVD-rental pioneer Netflix Inc. (NFLX) dropped 5% Friday on concerns about the company's outlook and increasing competition from DVD rental kiosks.

The stock recently traded down $2.27 at $43.05, a day after Netflix issued quarterly results.

At Lazard Capital Markets, analyst Barton Crockett, who has a sell rating on Netflix, said that despite an "impressive" quarter, earnings that topped analysts' estimates and raised 2009 subscriber forecasts were already priced into the stock, which has jumped nearly 50% since the beginning of the year.

Crockett also said the company's argument that kiosks are nothing to worry about "was not especially compelling."

The CDC says seven people -- so far -- got sick from a new kind of swine flu virus.

More cases are likely to be found, says CDC respiratory disease chief Anne Schuchat, MD, as the CDC's intensive investigation gets more data on suspected cases.

"We believe that human-to-human spread is occurring. That is unusual," Schuchat said at a news conference. "We don't know yet how wide it is spreading. We have taken steps to learn more."

All seven of the people with confirmed swine flu recovered. Only one patient was ill enough to require hospitalization. The swine flu disease was similar to human flu, except that nausea and diarrhea were more common.

Patients ranged in age from 9 to 54 and included three girls and four males.

Wildfires swept through a coastal region of South Carolina on Thursday and headed for North Myrtle Beach, destroying more than 40 homes and forcing more than 2,500 people to evacuate, state officials said.

Gov. Mark Sanford declared a state of emergency in Horry County, which includes the Myrtle Beach area, and officials of North Myrtle Beach were scrambling to get residents to pack up and flee.

No injuries have been reported since the fire began on Wednesday, but the blaze jumped a state highway and rapidly headed toward a heavily concentrated residential and tourist area, prompting the mass evacuations and the closing of schools and businesses in North Myrtle Beach.

The deadbeat in the title is a guy, Alvin Limardo, who came to Kinsey one day to hire her to find a certain 15 years old boy and give him something. He paid in advance but the check bounced, so Kinsey is forced to go look for him and settle things through (as she says, one cannot afford this when working on one’s own as the word gets out fast). She only manages to find out a few basics about the guy (for starters that his name was actually John Daggett and he only recently got out of jail) — when the police find his body on the beach, dead, looking like an accident. Not much has changed since I last smacked the keyboard and pushed the stupid “publish” button, which for some reason always takes 3-4 clicks to actually work. Perhaps this is Wordpress’s way of making me really think about what I’m putting out there. Or maybe it’s because I use a really hideous wireless mouse that refuses to function if its receiver is within 37 miles of any other electronic device.

I turned 30. Big, scary number. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel just a little bit old. With my vices, 30 is practically middle-aged. And I’m now faced with the awful truth that most of the world’s hottest celebrities are younger than me. That just pisses me the fuck off.

I’m fine with being 30 in real life. On the Internet, I wish I was 26 or 27. I should’ve lied about my birth year when I started X-E, because then I’d have another 3 or 4 years before people who hate me would have the right to describe me as “some thirty-something idiot who writes about soda and fruit snacks all day.” Oh well — I cannot escape my destiny:

Looks like I missed the hubbub, but apparently, the latest Mountain Dew spinoff was chosen by “we the people” for a national release. More importantly, the latest Mountain Dew spinoff is some kind of crazy ass electric blue. My brain and heart are at odds on this one. My brain wonders how PepsiCo could forget the massive risk involved with blue soft drinks, as evidenced with their earlier “Pepsi Blue” nightmare. (Which I covered in that oft-plagiarized opus, Dead Sodas.) Still, my heart loves the idea of drinking carbonated Romulan Ale too much to care.

When it comes to blue drinks, everyone wants to like them. Hell, just typing the term “blue drink” had made me 15% happier overall. We want to like blue drinks — and maybe we genuinely do — but when you get all objective and philosophical about it, there just aren’t going to be a lot of opportunities to down a bottle of blue soda without feeling stupid. It’s a little too precious. If McDonald’s started shaping their McNuggets like ninja stars, I’d be the first person in line for a golden arches tattoo, but I’d probably never eat Chicken McNuggets again. I don’t know if that’s a truly correlating analogy, but it’s late, and I’m stoned.

Did I really get this far without even telling you the name of this new blue drink? Seems I did. It’s Mountain Dew Voltage, and it’s “charged” with raspberry citrus flavor and ginseng. I always panic when I read “ginseng” on a beverage label, because it’s usually code for “something that will make me sad.” But it’s not so bad. It’s sweet as fuck, and I sorta feel as if I’m drinking from a pool of seventeen different soft drinks upon every sip, but it’s not so bad. Actually, it tastes like melted down Fla-Vor-Ices — and that is definitely “not so bad.”

And it is blue. Really blue. It’s not quite “ocean blue,” but if you were to color an ocean using crayons, it’s that kind of blue. It’s crayon ocean blue. I don’t foresee myself purchasing Mountain Dew Voltage too often in the future, but then again, as the first few paragraphs detail, I’m only allowed to drink warm milk and Sanka now. Fuuuuuck.

I’m still trying to wrap my head around these. Kellogg’s has taken plenty of hope shots in the past, but Operation fruit snacks? Seriously? Operation? It’s a nice idea if you’re a fool blogger who needs to lose some writer rust on an easy target, but what about everyone else?

Fruit snacks are mainly marketed to elementary school kids, but are children really going to pick Operation over Batman, Optimus, Miley, Barbie and whatever other fruit snack themes are out there? No way, I say. Fruit snack themes usually come by way of a certain something’s Q score at the schoolyard, and “the wacky doctor game” just does not rate in 2009.

Looking at the snacks, I realize that it’d take a psychotically advanced mind to connect Operation to them without the clues provided by the box and foily wrappers. There are frogs, birds, bells, dogs — all stuff that ties into the board game, but not in any remarkably iconic way. Really, it’s the sort of inane assortment you’d expect from a generic brand of fruit snacks found at the comically ethnic closeout store on the wrong side of the tracks. Plus, from everything I’ve seen, the individual packets include too many yellows and nowhere near enough reds. I consider this a personal insult, and so should you.

It is an atmosphere of air using an automatic intelligent motion detecting unit to detect movement. Unlike other air fresheners air continuously launch fragrance sprays automatically only after someone has been in the room. This feature helps preserve the product. Moreover, once it enters spraying mode of the closure and won ‘t spray again for 30 minutes unless someone manually push the button on the front of the hike holder. The starter kit includes a holder, a repuesio and two AA batteries. The unit can be placed on a flat surface or mounted on the wall. We got the scent of clean linen with our starter kit. The starter kit is also available in Apple Cinnamon fragrance and repuesios (MRP $ 3.49) can be obtained from the following four scents: Clean linen, Apple Cinnamon, spray the garden fresh and the country. The repuesios last about 30 days depending on traffic. his unit was super easy to assemble. Let's put aside for the moment the confusion on industry definitions of various chocolate manufacturing terms (compound, flake, etc.)

The first issue here is erosion in flavor and sensory quality. Chocolate with vegetable oil won't taste as good or have the aromatics or other sensory qualities that chocolate made with cocoa butter has.

The second issue is profit for domestic chocolate manufacturers. Ironically, changing the regulation doesn’t make sense from a financial standpoint either.

The CMA and FDA seem to underestimate the American people when it comes to the single foodstuff that is liked more than any other in this country. Chocolate is a revered, craved, worshipped product, and Americans are willing to pay for a quality, sensual food experience, especially when it comes to “indulgence” items. Ben & Jerry's and Haagen-Dazs ice cream brands became popular because of their flavor and emphasis on quality ingredients.

So the proposed regulation is completely inconsistent with these purchasing behavior patterns and the current prevailing wisdom of the American people -- that raw ingredients, quality and flavor are important.

That desire for quality and flavor has already caused an explosion in sales of imported chocolate in the last five years.

Domestic chocolate is already perceived as inferior to the import brands. Any further loss of flavor resulting from the substitution of an inferior ingredient runs the risk of completely turning off American consumers to domestic chocolate and sending more of them straight to the import brands.

In an odd twist, approving the vegetable oil regulation for chocolate could actually erode, not build, the domestic chocolate market.

Which means this regulation change is the exact opposite of the direction in which the industry should be headed to satisfy American consumers and to keep domestic chocolate sales up.

If anything, the CMA and FDA should make domestic chocolate manufacturing standards more stringent and quality-oriented, so as not to lose even more sales to the import market.

Friends say Julissa Brisman, 26, weighed about 100 pounds, not enough to overpower the man who showed up in her room at the Copley Place Marriott Tuesday night and shot her to death before fleeing the scene.

While her advertisement on Craigslist -- a site with ads that has been tied to other crimes across the country -- offered her services as a massage therapist, investigators have other ideas.

"The preliminary investigation suggests that the victim may have been involved with an escort service," Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said. "Detectives are investigating the possibility that this was an attempted robbery."

With a back-stab blindside set up and rarin' to go last week, will all the key players remain true to their plan to remove entrepeneur Brandon Synnott from Survivor: Tocantins, or will the castaways get antsy, forge new alliances and pick on someone else? No matter what, after watching tonight's episode, my love for Benjamin "Coach" Wade has not increased. He's still one of the best villains we've had in years. Six Timbirans to three Jalapoans. These are tough odds, regardless of the alliances formed last episode. Poor Joe Dowdle. That's the worst way to go. Night Twenty One is where we begin. The Forza tribe is all a bit down about Joe leaving. In the middle of the night, Benjamin "Coach" Wade decides to try and cheer everyone up with a story. And, oh what a story it is. Unfortunately, it's complete BS. Coach says he got airlifted into the Amazon jungle near the Peruvian border and was then captured by arrow-wielding natives who tied him to a pole and beat him with clubs until he blacked out. Then he escaped. The tribe is silent after that story. Coach, are you sure you're not just remembering the opening scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark? No one believes his stories. What a delusional nut job

The next morning, Coach once again is finding peace with the planet, doing his Tai Chi or whatever. The tribe watches on with continued disbelief. JT believes that his alliance with Coach, Stephen, Tyson and Debbie is still alive and strong. Coach says his routine is called Chong Ram, which is ancient and Tibetan and is only passed down orally, which is why you can't google it. Riiight. "Sierra is the bowel movements that come out of the dragon," says Coach about Sierra. He says this because Sierra said Coach looked funny doing his routine. Erinn is upset Joe's gone. She tells JT she likes the Jalapao members more so than her original tribe. It's pretty clear that Erinn wants to join JT. JT is cool with replacing Joe with Erinn.
