or those unfamiliar with the above acronym, OCTFCU stands for the Orange County Teachers Federal Credit Union. They recently changed their name to SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union. This bothers me for two reasons. First (which isn’t as big a deal as the second) is that I and many others grew up saying Octafoo. What are we going to call it now? SchoolsFirst? That’s lame. Second, the name change seems like a completely political move to me. As government spending in California has exploded in the past decade, the California Teachers Association has grown in size and influence in CA politics, negotiating better pay and pension contracts for its members.But the latest budget shortfall here has put a lot of pressure on the teachers union to take pay-cuts for its members. The union always tries to emotionally appeal to voters by claiming that we’re hurting the children by cutting school funding.
