I belive the affair was with Cynthia Hampton. Cynthia is the wife of former (top) Ensign staffer Doug Hampton. The Hamptons both worked in DC at the time.

Doug left the Ensign payroll in May 2008. Cynthia had worked on Ensign’s “Battle Born” PAC.

More interestingly, Cynthia was also the Assistant Treasurer of the NRCC. The NRCC’s treasurer, Chris Ward, was busted in early 2008 for embezzling millions of dollars over ten years. It seriously damaged the party. Ward supposedly “robbed” many PAC’s including Ensign’s “Battle Born.”

I have to wonder if Cynthia might have been in on the embezzling too. Maybe the Senator as well.

It seems unlikely that Cynthia’s spouse would try to blackmail someone just over an affair. It had to be bigger.
