national man day

national man day

A pair of Indiana brothers, Joel and Aaron Longanecker, have convinced more than a quarter-million males to promise to "stand up and do manly things" on June 15 in observance of their proposed new holiday -- National Man Day.

Their National Man Day page on Facebook urges men across the country to take time to get in touch with their masculine sides on Monday. Suggested activities include playing football, camping, hunting, eating 18-ounce steaks, blowing things up, shooting guns, punching each other for no reason, pumping some iron or "watching every Rambo movie from beginning to end. Straight through!"

The purpose of the proposed holiday, according to the National Man Day page, is to acknowledge that the time has arrived "to take back the crown of masculinity."

The photo on the Longaneckers' National Man Day Facebook page shows a pair of guys in camouflage hunting outfits roughhousing with axes at a campsite. Can't get a much more manly image than that, unless the ax-dueling was aboard ATVs, while a skillet of fresh-killed venison sizzles on the campfire, surrounded by beer-swilling men with dollar bills in their fists belching out bets on the outcome of the fight.

I was tempted to sign the pledge. It's been a long time since I took part in any of the suggested activities, and I've never had the opportunity to try my hand -- or lose it -- at campfire ax-play.

But then I remembered that the newspaper only recognizes a no-frills list of the major holidays. Since Easter isn't recognized, I doubt National Man Day has much of a chance as a paid holiday.

Call me a sellout, but I need the money. I won't be celebrating National Man Day on Monday, since I'll be at work, doing only a few mildly manly things. As a concession, I might not watch "So You Think You Can Dance" with my wife this week -- especially since Paris and Tony have been eliminated.

And come to think of it, isn't Super Bowl Sunday already the unofficial National Man Day?
