The "Jon and Kate Plus 8" announcement on June 22nd? They're getting divorced, and they filed the papers on Monday

After months of rumors and speculation, Jon and Kate Gosselin, stars of the popular TLC reality television series “Jon and Kate Plus 8”, officially announced on Monday’s episode of the show that they are separating.

According to CNN, Jon and Kate filed their divorce papers in Pennsylvania on Monday, ending their 10-year marriage. The announcement Jon and Kate made on Monday confirms rampant tabloid speculation that the couple’s marriage was in trouble.

“I’m not very fond of the idea, personally, but I know it’s necessary because my goal is peace for the kids,” said Kate Gosselin during Monday’s episode of “Jon and Kate Plus 8”.

“Kate and I have decided to separate,” Jon said. “It’s just not good for us to be arguing in front of our kids.”

Jon and Kate’s eight children--consisting of twin girls and sextuplet–will continue living at their home in Wernersville, Pennsylvania.

According to the Yahoo! TV Blog, on Kate’s days with the children, Jon would live elsewhere. However, on Jon’s assigned days, he would live in the house, with and Kate forcing to find other accommodations.

Despite their separation, Jon and Kate have both said that the television show will continue. However, in future episodes, their time with the children would be taped separately.

“Jon and Kate Plus 8” chronicles the lives of Jon, Kate and their family of eight children. It is currently on its fifth season.

Jon and Kate’s marriage has been the center of public scrutiny ever since Jon was allegedly caught by paparazzi photographers drunk and cheating on Kate with another woman. Additionally, it has also been rumored by tabloids that Kate was romantically involved with the family’s bodyguard.

Jon and Kate have both denied these accusations.

Regardless, their marriage was not a happy one, and their announcement of a separation was for the best.

“I was too passive. I just let her rule the roost and do whatever she wanted,” Jon said. “Now I finally stood up on my own two feet, and I’m proud of myself.”

Kate said that their goals were now different, but that she did not hate Jon.

Both Jon and Kate have also attributed some of the stress in their marriage to the paparazzi and the media, who they believe harass their family.

“It’s been so stressful, “said Jon. “Thank god we have the show so we can tell what we want to tell, but people just tell what they want to tell anyway.”

Our Take

While this news doesn’t come as any surprise, it still comes as a little depressing. Not necessarily because the two are divorcing (I’m definitely not a fan of Kate), but because it’s going to seriously suck for their kids. Not only are they unwilling celebrities whose every action is monitored by an entire country, but now they have to do it with one less parent.
